Clearing a garden with brambles and Japanese knotweed, it is surprising how similar the two buds look initially...
The first photograph is of an emerging bramble bud, you can see the cut woody stem to the right. That gives the plant away when you look close up!
This is Japanese knotweed red emerging buds from the crown of the plant. Here you can clearly see the dead cane (broken off at the base).
